unilateral spatial neglect

The purpose of this prospective study of stroke recovery is to examine the effects of brain injury that produce a syndrome known as unilateral spatial neglect. Specifically, we would like to understand the factors of this syndrome that influence the degree of functional disability and to investigate possible mechanisms for recovery from the deficits associated with this syndrome. We are using behavioural task performance as well as anatomical and functional neuroimaging techniques to investigate whether patients with neglect fall into dissociable subtypes. In addition, we are investigating whether subtyping of patients with neglect helps to predict functional outcome and successful community reintegration. Patients are assessed at an early stage of recovery (< 4 weeks post-stroke) and then re-assessed at a later stage of recovery (6-8 months post-stroke). Ultimately, we hope that the culmination of these efforts might also aid in the development of new rehabilitation techniques or treatment protocols that would help to improve the course of recovery in these patients.
