St. Patrick's Center
Day programs, work training, health education, and other programs for people with severe mental illness

 

McMurphy's Grill

Time: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m weekdays

Location: 614 N. 11th, St. Louis
Operated by St. Patrick's Center - work training for homeless or severely mentally ill people. Trainees learn every facet of the business and are placed in food service jobs after a 6-month training period.

First of its kind in the nation.  Continues to make a name for itself for the great food, good service, friendly ambience and important mission.

The volunteer office can arrange a tour and can schedule future times for you to volunteer, if interested.  They welcome one-time volunteering as well as a regular volunteer schedule.”

Edgewood Children's Center
Residential treatment for emotionally disturbed children.  Children 6-15 ½ years of age stay for on average 18-22 months.  They also have a day program for autistic children ages 3-12 yrs. old.

Places for People
Residental treatment for homeless people; a model for similar programs in other states. They have 3 programs they will explain when you call or visit.

Salvation Army Family Haven
Emergency shelter (54 bed facility) for homeless families (primarily women with children), case management and treatment programs to empower families in crisis to become self-sufficient.

Salvation Army Harbor Light
Short term (3-5 days) nonmedical detoxification services for alcohol abusers and 30 day residential substance abuse treatment program for mainly men.

Independence Center
Provides vocational / career counseling, transitional employment, housing, socialization and treatment for the severely mentally ill.

This is a “clubhouse” for people with mental disorders including schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder.  Tour of the facilities, possibly observe their weekly group meeting.

Lakeside Center (School for Delinquent Boys)
Provides individual, group and family treatment, psychiatric and psychological consultation, education, recreation and medical care for disturbed adolescents.

Rich Swinger approved WUMS visits 3/00 /cmb

At present (3/00) this residential treatment facility helps 13-17 yrs. old, assigned by the St. Louis Family Court system.  Their cottages and school can house up to 73 residents.

Very similar to Marygrove in services.  Michelle Burack

Hawthorn Children's Psychiatric Hospital
Inpatient treatment of severely emotional disturbed children 6-18.  Staff includes all types of clinical personnel to develop individualized treatment program.  Mental health day treatment serves clients 12-18 in need of intensive therapeutic psychological educational programming.

Archway Communities
Residential counseling, treatment, and rehabilitaion program for drug and alcohol abuse. Clients are 18 yrs. and older; 80% are male.  All types of substance abuse.

Group meetings for recovering alcoholics
Narcotics Anonymous
Group meetings and support for recovering addicts -- all types of substance abuse.

Support groups for people motivated to change, but open to visitors. 

These are two types of 12-step programs available; there are others for other problems. cmb

Marygrove 
Residental treatment center for children, from birth to age 21.  Most residents are adolescents.  Center serves 108 children everyday.  Day would include joining psychiatrist in weekly assessments with residents.
